Bhagavad Gita on comparison and self-worth

The Gita has a word for the life that is yours to live: svadharma. Twice Krishna says it is better to walk your own path imperfectly than someone else’s perfectly. These verses are about measuring yourself by your own work, not by anyone’s results.

5 verses from the Gita

  1. Better your own duty imperfectly than another’s done well.

“Better is one's own duty, though imperfect, than another's duty well performed. Better death in one's own duty; another's duty is dangerous.”

You can stop measuring yourself against others and return to the work that is actually yours.

  2. Krishna says it again near the end, so it is not missed.

“One's own duty, though imperfect, is better than another's duty well performed. Doing the work set by one's nature, a person does not incur wrongdoing.”

You can stop measuring yourself against other people's lives. Peace comes from doing what is actually yours.

  3. You can be your own friend or your own enemy.

“Lift yourself by yourself; do not let yourself fall. The true self is its own friend, and the true self is its own enemy.”

You are not helpless in your own life; the way you handle yourself changes everything.

  4. For one who has mastered the mind, the mind is a friend.

“For one who has conquered the lower self by the true self, the true self is a friend. For one who has not conquered the lower self, the true self behaves like an enemy.”

Self-mastery feels like relief because the part of you that fought you starts helping.

  5. The work is yours. The result is not a measure of you.

“You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits. Do not become the cause of the result, and do not cling to inaction.”

There is relief in giving your full effort without carrying the burden of the result.
